The tidal island of Mont Saint Michel rises out of the shallow bay like an unreal fairytale castle.

The famous Mont Saint Michel monastery can be seen for the first time when it is still an hour's drive away. An arrow points in its direction on the viewing platform at the motorway service station. Behind long fields and rolling hills, it can be made out in the dark; imposing, conical and strangely eerie.
The owner of the bed and breakfast had given us a tip along the way: For the best view through the winding riverbed, it's worth keeping an eye out in the village in front of it for a sign with a sheep and a crossed-out farting dog. For what? But by then she had already disappeared into the kitchen.
